Classroom Policies and Procedures
Attendance…
Daily attendance is expected unless a child is running a fever or is actively ill. Mild complaints many times are forgotten once a child becomes involved in the activities of the day. If your child is absent, please send a written note from a parent or guardian as validation of an excused absence. Three unexcused absences results in an Action Alert being sent home.
Tardiness…
The school day starts at 9:15 AM. Please have your child arrive on time, as lateness costs them valuable learning time and disrupts the flow of class. Be advised that five tardies equal one unexcused absence, and will result in an Action Alert being sent home.
Going Home…
Please be sure to inform your child’s teacher of the way your child will be going home each day (bus, car rider, walker, or Day Care Van.) The teacher will have a list and your child will be sent home that way. If for any reason this will change, PLEASE send in a note stating the new way home. We are required to send your child home their original way if written notice of the change has not been presented to the teacher.
Uniforms…
The students are required to wear a white, navy, or light blue shirt and navy blue or khaki bottoms every day, even Fridays. Jeans are not acceptable. If a student is not in uniform, they will be sent to the office in the morning and asked to change. They will then have to report back to the office at the end of the day to change back into their own clothes. This can be very disruptive during the school day, so please make every effort to abide by this rule.
Breakfast/ Lunch...
Breakfast is served at school daily. Every student at our school is offered a free breakfast. If your child needs to eat breakfast at school, they need to be here by 8:45 AM to be let into the cafeteria line.
Snack...
As you can see from the above schedule, we will be eating lunch at a very late time in the afternoon. Therefore, it will be necessary for a mid-morning snack. We are asking that each parent provide a healthy snack for their child daily. Please do not send cookies and sweets. Some examples of a healthy snack is: bananas, crackers, yogurt, or cheese.
Unified Discipline…
Idlewild participates in a unified discipline plan. Behavior expectations, class rules and consequences are the same throughout the school and enforced uniformly by the staff. Be assured that behavior expectations are age appropriate. Students are counseled as to appropriate ways to behave and rewarded for good behavior. They are encouraged to “make a fresh start” each day.
Class Rules…
Respect looks like - hands, feet and objects to ourselves.
Responsibility looks like - teachers teach, students learn - we all have a job to do.
Safety looks like - no running or yelling inside, and we walk with our pencils and scissors pointing down.
Rewards…
Rewards are given for good behavior. Rewards include things such as; a sticker, treasure box, happy notes sent home, treats, and lots of hugs!!!
Consequences…
1st rule broken……verbal warning
2nd rule broken…...verbal warning
3rd rule broken…..card flip and 15 minute time out in another class
(When they come back, they get another chance to start over.)
4th rule broken…..verbal warning
5th rule broken…..Verbal warning and card flip
6th rule broken…..card flip and referral to the office
Severe behavior will earn a visit with an administrator. Please carefully review the student rights and responsibilities handbook you were given. All behaviors and consequences are listed.
Homework Policies…
Homework is assigned monthly. Your child has a Homework notebook with the monthly homework calendar taped inside. Assigned homework in the kindergarten year is a parent assisted activity. A large portion of our homework is required by our reading and math programs. As well as the daily homework sent by your child’s teacher, nightly reading of 20 minutes is required and will be documented in your child’s reading record. Please read with your child every night. Please return the homework on Fridays. Missed homework and reading will be noted and reflected in student evaluations. Please start this healthy habit of doing homework daily NOW!!!!
Conferences…
There will be a required parent-teacher conference in late October. Any other times during the year that you may want to discuss your child with their teacher, call the office, leave a message and your child’s teacher will contact you during available time to have a phone conference or schedule an appointment to sit down and talk with you. Drop in conferences before and after school are discouraged in order to preserve your privacy as well as give you our undivided attention.
Parents Visits to School…
You are welcome to visit us to volunteer, eat lunch, or come to the classroom at any time. Please enter the building at the main entrance and sign in as a visitor at the office to receive a visitor pass.
Thank you for your time in going over these procedures. We want to make this a wonderful learning year for your child. If we work together as a team we can make that happen. We are looking forward to a wonderful year!!!
